Come and see the thousand faces of Hungary and the Hungarian culture

Calvinist College Debrecen

Address: 4026 Debrecen, Kálvin tér 16.

One of the citadels of intellectual life of the period in Hungary, the institution opened its gates in 1538. It burnt down twice, first in 1564 and later in 1802. Only the unparallel sacrifice of the students being on vacation made it possible to start the following semesters on time. A new wing was added in 1804-16 in classicistic style, based on Mihály Péchy's plans, and another one in 1870-74, designed by Alajos Vasél. Countless poor, but extremely talented students had the chance to sharpen their skills among these walls taught by professors from universities of Germany and England. Latin remains the language of education until the 19th century.

The Library of the institution is the largest collection of the Calvinist Church in Hungary. Rarities not only in Europe but in the World can be found here, dating back even to the 13th century. Beside these, the manuscripts of Mihály Csokonai Vitéz, János Arany, Ferenc Kölcsey and Endre Ady represent invaluable treasures.

The organizers reserve the right to change the program at any time.
