Folk Musical Instruments – Exhibition organized by the Hungarian Folk Musical Instruments Guild (
Magyar Hangszermives Ceh)
Location: Ferenc Erdei Cultural Center (6000 Kecskemet, Deak Ferenc ter 1)
Open: daily, 10.00 AM – 8.00 PM
One of the specialties of the exhibition will be the introduction of Mihaly Barsony’s instrument-making shop, the only fully preserved traditional instrument-making heritage in Hungary. (Mihaly Barsony, Master of Folk Arts, 1915-1989, Tiszaalpar.)
The new instruments displayed at the exhibit can be purchased individually.

The exhibit displays Zoltan Moser’s photo report about the Kodaly legacy: song and music narrated by black-and-white images. Dedicated to the memory of Zoltan Kodaly, with the love of the Hungarian folk music.

Besides offering a dance club alternative to the youth, the Hungarian Dance-house Guild initiated a monumental collecting process of folk music and dance. The exhibit displays the images of the past 35 years of this fieldwork.

In the playhouse, children will be able to get acquainted with the materials and methods of traditional arts and crafts. Among others, they can learn the techniques of
felt making, rope making, string weaving, papermaking, and rag ball making. …And, of course, they can take home the results of their work.

Zoltan Kodaly

Zoltan Kodaly was born in
Kecskemet, Hungary in 1882, and died in Budapest, Hungary in 1967. A colleague of Bela Bartok, he was one of the most prominent figures of Hungarian folk music collection and research, a world-renowned Hungarian composer. According to an archive recording,
Kodaly believed that music is nourishment that sets you free (
a zene táplálék, mely felszabadít). He was convinced that
everyone has a right to music, and teaching of music shouldn’t be confined to the training of a musical elite.
